Going Local

Kaz and I have been involved in the local political scene since we moved here.  By necessity really.  It started with the politics of toxic waste dumping above the aquifer that sources Oracle's water. Imagine our horror when we found out that the University of Arizona was carting radioactive and chemical waste to a disposal site a couple miles away from the house we bought after moving from Queens.  To make matters worse the University was hiding what it was doing from Pinal County officials as well as residents of the region.  It was a humdinger of a wake-up call.  So we never went back to political sleep.

In the pic my tee shirt advertises our support for Ellie Moreno Brown who is a candidate, as my shirt says, for Justice of the Peace in the Copper Corridor region of Eastern Pinal County.  It's an extremely important position because all manner of legal issues come before JP's.  A good JP can settle a broad range of local disputes with caring, cunning and knowledge of the law.

In Sometimes David Wins, I only have two chapters on Oracle and local politics.  They're pretty good, but much of what I have to say will have to wait - maybe for a book focused exclusively on O-town. In and for itself-- it's one hell of a storied place.
